FreeStream Scorpions Football Club

Match Day 4 - 30th of March 2006

If there ever was a defining moment in a football team's quest for champion status, this was the one. On our 4th outing it was the usual FreeStream Scorpions pattern, which is... give the opposition a head start, and then see if we can catch them. And so it was again this time around. Initially it was a very low scoring match and although we conceded an early goal, it stayed like that for 15 minutes. But then a flurry of goals (most of them against us!), saw us enter the major break 1 - 3 down and really struggling against a side which was quite experienced at slowing the game down to a tempo which suited them.

The start of the second half was more of the same, and within five minutes the mighty Scorpions were down 1 - 4 and staring down the barrel of a frustrating loss. Then with a bit of inspiration from the cap (Serge), we fired up, and goals from the incisive Steve and David drew us level at 4 - 4. Our opponents put their noses in front again with four minutes to go and it might have broken our spirits after working so hard to get back into the match but an equalising goal from Serge from a brilliant Steve pass saw the Scorpions level at 5 - 5. The last minute was intense and a final winner with less than 30 seconds on the match clock gave the Scorpions a fine come-from-behind victory and a final scoreline of 6 - 5. However it will be better remembered for the fighting never-say-die spirit we showed rather than for the scoreline, or the beautiful football we played.

Simon in goals marshalled the defence well, while Gordon and Roger were typically solid stopping the opposition, especially in the second half. Kien had moments of brilliance around the forward line as did the Roccuzzo brothers; David and Steven. But in the end it was a combined effort and gritty team performance which showed that the FreeStream Scorpions are true championship contenders.
